Strong and Fit? Fail and Tired: The Choice IS Yours!

Strength is more than just lifting a thousand pound anvil for a cheering crowd: strength is the ability to move your own body with ease. We gain all of our lifelong physical abilities as kids: kids can do pullups – boys and girls; Kids can sprint at a moment’s notice; kids can squat down and burn an ant with a magnifying glass for fun. The fact that the vast majority of us as adults cannot do these things is only mildly influenced by age, mostly influenced by lack of physical activity. Use it or lose it absolutely applies here. Here’s a shot of the 85-89 age bracket for the 100-meter sprint in the World Masters Athletic Championships:

According to their ages, these dudes are no spring chickens but they sure can run! What allows them to do this at such an advanced age? They are strong. I admire these folks to the utmost, because they refuse to let age define them. They know what it is to be strong and fit, and they refuse to be like the vast majority of our grandparents.

They like to say that after the age of thirty it is all downhill from there. Well, that depends on a few factors: are you training to be stronger this year than you were last year?

Are you choosing to eat foods that facilitate life or subtract from it? Are you using your body the way it was programmed by nature to be used? The answers to these questions can predict the future. So, if we are ready to make a change -I really hope we are- and become the strongest versions of ourselves, to live our one and only life the best way possible, it is time to start training.

Not to become some muscle-head or to become an exercise freak, but to become a strong, healthy, able-bodied person that can live life to the fullest. The internet is rife with information put out by trainers; there are thousands of books on the market; there are plenty of trainers available for hire. Even just ten minutes a day of deliberate training can make a world of difference. Don’t let yourself gradually sink into decrepitude.
